Frilling

I have had frilling on my dry plates over the years.

the emulsion lifts off the plate and creases and sits down again or it’s brittle and cracks. It happens when the gelatin in the liquid silver emulsion doesn’t completely adhere to the glass (or whatever) plate.

this is a 5×7 dry plate I made a few years ago. I coated the plate and put it on a very cold stone (pizza stone) and the emulsion sticks very well to the plate. but sometimes years later well …

as you can see hte emulsion on the left had trouble, the emulsion on the right seems fine, but in a few years maybe not.

I am a Freelance Photographer in Rhode Island. I make photographs using a variety of methods with and without a camera, and I teach photography online and in person. I make photo emulsions from scratch, I coat my own photo paper and make cyanotypes too. I am a huge fan of Caffenol ( I helped write the Caffenol Cookbook ) and instead of instant coffee, I roast my own Sumatra Robusta beans. I sell them so you can make your own long lasting, film and print developer called Sumatranol. I also sell silver recovery products.
