Hand Held Photography

It doesn’t take long to realize that if your shutter is open and you move while you are taking your picture, it might not be good. There was a saying years ago that you should not use a shutter speed slower than your lens’ focal length without a tripod. This means if you have 150mm lens, you should use a tripod for all shutter speeds slower than 125S.

they sell all sorts of devices that are like tripods but aren’t. There is the monopod, which is just 1 tripod leg. There is the cord you screw into your tripod mount and you step on it and pull up. The taunt line works pretty well. You can lean against something with a large mass, something you can’t move. I like using a tree or telephone pole. I lean against these things as an extension of my body. You can also hold the camera close to your “core” and exhale slowly.

I regularly shoot hand held without a cord or monopod, I just hold my body rigid and count for my exposure. the only movement is the beating of my heart.

I am currently working on slowing my heart rate.

I am a Freelance Photographer in Rhode Island. I make photographs using a variety of methods with and without a camera, and I teach photography online and in person. I make photo emulsions from scratch, I coat my own photo paper and make cyanotypes too. I am a huge fan of Caffenol ( I helped write the Caffenol Cookbook ) and instead of instant coffee, I roast my own Sumatra Robusta beans. I sell them so you can make your own long lasting, film and print developer called Sumatranol. I also sell silver recovery products.
