Door to Door / Cold Call

one of the trademarks of being self employed is the unfortunate experience of going door to door, and portfolio drop-offs. You learn fast to have a thick skin and often you make a loud WHEW! sound after you get rejected by people who really are not very nice.

Most recently I attempted to leave behind something at a company I was told would really like the images I make. It was at a studio visit from well liked former employee, who says “show to so-and-so”.

easier said than done.

Leave-behind an open studio to advertise a building with 32 artists given to someone interested, but the mother of the owner tells you they’re very busy ( drinking coffee shooting breeze ) and to get out. most recently – having a conversation with someone nearby and making exposures, another person working at that business sees me and accepts my business card and urges me to drop off a sample book .. two days later I call to retrieve it and was told by the mother of the owner they basically tossed my portfolio in the trash and “why would anyone leave behind anything of value with someone who knows absolutely nothing about anything” .. Instead it will be left somewhere outside the building at 8:30am 3 days later.

I can’t imagine working with such difficult people, and realize that I am pretty lucky she showed who she really is so I can remove them from my list.

I make photo emulsions from scratch, I coat my own photo paper and make cyanotypes too. I am a huge fan of Caffenol ( I helped write the Caffenol Cookbook ) and instead of instant coffee, I roast my own Sumatra Robusta beans. I sell them so you can make your own long lasting, film and print developer called Sumatranol. I also sell silver recovery products.
