Door to Door / Cold Call

one of the trademarks of being self employed is the unfortunate experience of going door to door. You learn fast to have a thick skin and often you make a loud WHEW! sound after you get rejected by people who really are not very nice.

Most recently I re-attempted to leave behind something at a company I was told would really like the images I make. First time It was at a studio visit from well liked former employee, who says “show to so-and-so”.

easier said than done.

Leave-behind for an open studio (to advertise for bi-annual open studio event with 32 artists) encouraged to be dropped, someone invited me in from the parking lot and asked me to give a mailer to them. Person in charge not very happy, shoos me away; and most recently – was in the area and having a conversation with someone nearby making some impressions. someone sees me, comments about my large format camera, accepts my business card, views a small portfolio and then urges me to drop it off .. again, my expectations are very low.
two days later I call to ask when I can retrieve it and was told by the person in charge they basically tossed my portfolio in the trash and when I said I gave it to someone who was interested in it I was asked

why would anyone leave behind anything of value with someone who knows absolutely nothing about anything

Little did she know I like things from the trash and sometimes use it to make photographs, but Instead of the trash, I offered to be there in 20 mins to pick it up, I was asked to pick it up at 8:30am Monday. The weird things is I was called by the police and given a no trespass order, after her employees invited me in. I went with a police escort to retrieve the personal property, so I wouldn’t be arrested.

I am pretty lucky she showed her true colors, difficult customers, I’d rather not have.
